THUNDERBIRD

On my merchandise and website, you’ll find a striking Thunderbird design, created by the incredibly talented Jessica Chickite, an artist from the We Wai Kai First Nation in Campbell River—my great-grandmother Eleanor’s ancestral home.

I approached Jessica with a request for artwork that embodies my Nation and my identity. She chose the Thunderbird for its powerful symbolism of power , strength, and courage—qualities she sees in me as an athlete. To say I am honored by this collaboration is an understatement.

Jessica is a Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ native artist, and she comes from a lineage of leaders; she is the great-granddaughter of the late hereditary Chief Johnny Chickite and the daughter of Max and Barbara Chickite. Her artistic journey began at the age of nine when she won her first native art contest, and since then, she has followed in her father’s footsteps, blending traditional techniques with her own unique style.

Her artistic mediums range from paper and wood to canvas and deer hide drums. Jessica has made significant contributions to her community, creating murals in schools and public spaces. Notably, she was chosen to design and paint the front of the mini big house at North Island College in Campbell River.

Recently, Jessica has fulfilled her dream of becoming a full-time artist. In 2023, she ventured into digital art and logo design for local businesses. She is also frequently invited to work within the school district, where she shares her art and educates children about First Nations culture, believing it’s vital to preserve this rich heritage for future generations.
